Meeting Point: Car park in massive layby on south side of A57 heading towards Sheffield at SK217875 one mile east of Ladybower Inn (see P on map below) (SATNAV for Ladybower Inn – S33 0AX Time: 08:30 Lunch: bring hot drink and packed lunch if you stay out walking on the moors Transport: Members cars Cost: free Leader: Martin Kaye
The target species on this trip is the Ring Ouzel, our migratory mountain Blackbird. If we can find the birds fairly close to the car park, then all but the last couple of hundred metres, which is a steep pull, are fairly level and on good tracks but walking boots are advised and clothing suitable for being on the moors. Distance about 1.5 miles return. (There’s even a small Bronze Age stone circle to delight historians).
Members can return to the car park at any point if their time is short or they have had enough.
For those wanting more, we can extend the walk by walking over to Bamford Edge and then return along the Edge – distance 5 miles – footpaths all the way but moderately tough.
Other birds we may come across are typical of the moorland including Red Grouse, Meadow Pipits, and possibly Raven, Peregrine, Buzzard and Kestrel.
