Meeting Point: Road side parking SK258800 on the Grindleford – Foxhouse Road (see maps 1 and 2 below – usually a few cars there already) Time: 08:30 Transport: Members cars Cost: free Leader: Martin Kaye
Suggest approach from Grindleford on the B6521 because parking is on the left side of the road so it’s less dangerous to pulling out when leaving.
The first part involves about a mile of easy walking around Lawrencefield Moor, then down into the upper section of Padley Gorge. We then return to the cars giving the option of an early departure.
The target species on the moor include Cuckoo and Tree Pipit while in the Gorge we would hope to see Redstart, Pied and Spotted Flycatcher and if we’re lucky, Wood Warbler. There should also be many other more common woodland birds.
For those wanting a longer session, there’s the option of going to Barbrook Plantation where the the same birds are expected but giving the option of picking up those species missed at Padley Gorge. Map 3 shows how to transfer from Padley and Map 4 shows where to park – lay-bys on both left and right of the road with 2 large white field gates either side of the road.
