Report on trip to Old Moor RSPB reserve – 6/4/17

Three members had arrived in the Old Moor car park by the appointed time of 9:30am and, under the direction of Jeff Davies, duly set off with a target of finding sixty species. The sun shone warmly all day, but with a cold edge to a freshening wind we were glad of the promise of many hides to visit. Alas, these turned out to be colder than being out in the open!

Blackbird, Black-headed Gull, Black-tailed Godwit, Blue Tit, Bullfinch, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Collared Dove, Common Buzzard, Common Kestrel, Common Snipe, Coot, Cormorant, Dunnock, Gadwall, Goldfinch, Great Crested Grebe, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Greylag Goose, Herring Gull, Jackdaw, Lapwing, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Linnet, Little Grebe, Long-tailed Tit, Magpie, Mallard, Moorhen, Mute Swan, Oystercatcher, Pheasant, Pied Wagtail, Pochard, Reed Bunting, Robin, Sand Martin, Shelduck, Shoveller, Starling, Stock Dove, Teal, Tree Sparrow, Tufted Duck, Wigeon, Willow Warbler, Woodpigeon, Wren, and Yellowhammer came to 53 species.

The target was therefore easily surpassed by the addition of Speckled Wood, Orange-tip and Peacock butterflies, a large maurauding Carp, a docile Terrapin and several species of plant in bloom (Cowslip, Coltsfoot, Gorse, Broom…)

JMNR – 18th March 2017 work party report

Four members attended this month’s work party in showery but mild conditions. The west ditch was cleared as planned, Buddleia pruned (all four), and various areas cleared of dead vegetation. See the separate post for the wildlife sightings.

Derwent Trip Saturday 18th March CANCELLED

The weather forecast for the Peak District is pretty dire over the weekend with strong winds and the possibility of heavy rain. Of all the trips we undertake, this one is the most at risk from adverse weather but in previous years, it has always been at least OK. Sadly, not on this occasion. If you know anyone who might have wished to go but hasn’t got access to emails, we’d be grateful if you would let them know.

Report on trip to Budby Common – 8/3/17

Ten members assembled beside the extremely noisy A616 at 08:30 then quickly moved onto the relative peace of the Common.  There was very little wind and though the sky was cloudy, it was reasonably warm.  However, very little could be seen or heard in the way of avian fauna although sharp eared Dag picked up the call of a Woodlark but from the opposite direction to that which we were walking.  Pete Faulkner also possesses keen ears and his insistence that he could hear a Yellow Hammer was finally rewarded with a positive sighting.

Five Jays in the nearby copse gave some entertainment before we were drawn onwards by the odd, faint call of a Woodlark.  We paused in the middle of the Common just west of the cattle grid for a serious attempt to see our target species.  Eventually we managed to locate one perched at some distance on the top of a tree.  Now I don’t know whether Woodlarks are slugabeds or whether they take time over their breakfast before getting down to courting but all of a sudden, we were surrounded by calls and Woodlarks demonstrating their impressive song flight.

On the subsequent meander around the Common, we also had sightings of a pair of perched Kestrels, two Common Buzzards and a Peregrine which flashed across the horizon.

Ogstonians

Just before lunchtime, we headed north to the Welbeck Raptor Watchpoint where almost immediately Dougie latched onto a Goshawk which everyone was able to catch a sighting of.  This was the first of three occasions when Goshawks showed themselves.  The other notable sighting was of 14 Buzzards in the air at once.

A thoroughly excellent trip, 43 species seen all told with both target species in the ‘bag’ and for icing on the cake, we ended up in the pub at Cuckney!

JMNR work party – Saturday 18th March 2017

This month we will be clearing the north and west ditches of any accumulated debris and obstructions. Typically this involves lifting out broken branches, cutting back bramble runners, removing any tall vegetation, raking along the channel and possibly shovelling out excessive silt if it is blocking the flow. We should have plenty of time to look round the four ponds to see if there is any frogspawn.

Meet at the reserve on Saturday, 18th March at 9:30 am. We will finish around lunchtime. All members are welcome and no previous experience is necessary. Please wear appropriate work clothes, stout shoes, boots or wellies, and gardening gloves or equivalent. The tool list: secateurs, loppers, sturdy garden rake, spade or narrow shovel. Bring one or more if you can, otherwise just come along as we do have a few tools and always need someone to steer the wheelbarrow and do some light lifting.

For further information about the reserve visit the Jim Mart NR pages on the Ogston Bird Club website. You can contact Peter Faulkner by email ([email protected]) or on 0784 214 8888 if you have any questions about the work party.

March 2017 – Guided walk report

After a day of continuous rain it was something of a surprise when the walk leader, Paul Beard, set off in search of “plenty of mud”. The dire predictions proved to be wildly overstated and all of the 20+ party remained upright throughout the walk to Brackenfield via Carr Lane. The return via Millers Lane and Brackenfield Church was also uneventful and the whole walk yielded a good total of 51 species.

Blackbird, Black-headed Gull, Blue Tit, Brambling, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Coal Tit, Common Buzzard (max. 8 together), Common Snipe, Coot, Cormorant, Dunnock, Goldeneye, Goldfinch, Goosander (12), Great Crested Grebe, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Greylag Goose, Herring Gull, House Sparrow, Jay, Kestrel, Lapwing, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Linnet, Long-tailed Tit, Mallard, Mistle Thrush, Moorhen, Nuthatch, Oystercatcher, Pheasant, Pied Wagtail, Reed Bunting, Robin, Rook, Sparrowhawk, Starling, Stock Dove, Teal, Treecreeper, Tree Sparrow, Tufted Duck, Willow Warbler/Chiffchaff, Woodpigeon, Wren, Yellowhammer.

Rufford CP Trip Report – Tues 21st Feb 2017

For the 3 members who arrived at 07:55, this was an incredibly successful trip because they saw all the birds that had been targeted. The leader who arrived at 08:10 was highly miffed because he ‘dipped’ on the Hawfinches which had just flown off, not to be seen again! Grr!

Hawfinch

However, the 6 members who attended did have an excellent time in pleasant, breeze free, spring like weather, clocking up 49 species before lunchtime.  Besides the the Hawfinches, the other highlights at Rufford were good views of Siskin, Lesser Redpoll, Male and Female Goosander, Goldcrest and close up views of a Marsh Tit.

We then moved over to the nearby Eakring Flash to find and photograph the magnificently plumaged drake Garganey.

JMNR – 18th February 2017 work party report

With just two members in attendance we contented ourselves with checking, cleaning out and repairing 26 nest boxes on the reserve, and then removed the few remaining logs and small branches left over from the recent visit of our tree surgeon.

JMNR work party – Saturday 18th February 2017

This month we will be checking and cleaning out the bird boxes on both the reserve and in the nearby wood and, subject to the weather conditions, having a bonfire.

Meet at the reserve on Saturday, 18th February at 9:30 am. We will finish around lunchtime. All members are welcome and no previous experience is necessary. Please wear appropriate work clothes, stout shoes, boots or wellies, and gardening gloves or equivalent. Most tools are available on-site but bring along anything you think might help; this month a short ladder, loppers, ‘Marigolds’, a small paint scrapper and a pen could prove useful.

Organised work parties take place at the Jim Mart reserve on the morning of the third Saturday in every month, except in December. For further information about the reserve visit the Jim Mart NR pages on the Ogston Bird Club website, or contact Peter Faulkner by email ([email protected]) or on 0784 214 8888 nearer the date.
