March 2017 – Guided walk report

After a day of continuous rain it was something of a surprise when the walk leader, Paul Beard, set off in search of “plenty of mud”. The dire predictions proved to be wildly overstated and all of the 20+ party remained upright throughout the walk to Brackenfield via Carr Lane. The return via Millers Lane and Brackenfield Church was also uneventful and the whole walk yielded a good total of 51 species.

Blackbird, Black-headed Gull, Blue Tit, Brambling, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Coal Tit, Common Buzzard (max. 8 together), Common Snipe, Coot, Cormorant, Dunnock, Goldeneye, Goldfinch, Goosander (12), Great Crested Grebe, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Greylag Goose, Herring Gull, House Sparrow, Jay, Kestrel, Lapwing, Lesser Black-backed Gull, Linnet, Long-tailed Tit, Mallard, Mistle Thrush, Moorhen, Nuthatch, Oystercatcher, Pheasant, Pied Wagtail, Reed Bunting, Robin, Rook, Sparrowhawk, Starling, Stock Dove, Teal, Treecreeper, Tree Sparrow, Tufted Duck, Willow Warbler/Chiffchaff, Woodpigeon, Wren, Yellowhammer.

Rufford CP Trip Report – Tues 21st Feb 2017

For the 3 members who arrived at 07:55, this was an incredibly successful trip because they saw all the birds that had been targeted. The leader who arrived at 08:10 was highly miffed because he ‘dipped’ on the Hawfinches which had just flown off, not to be seen again! Grr!

Hawfinch

However, the 6 members who attended did have an excellent time in pleasant, breeze free, spring like weather, clocking up 49 species before lunchtime.  Besides the the Hawfinches, the other highlights at Rufford were good views of Siskin, Lesser Redpoll, Male and Female Goosander, Goldcrest and close up views of a Marsh Tit.

We then moved over to the nearby Eakring Flash to find and photograph the magnificently plumaged drake Garganey.

JMNR – 18th February 2017 work party report

With just two members in attendance we contented ourselves with checking, cleaning out and repairing 26 nest boxes on the reserve, and then removed the few remaining logs and small branches left over from the recent visit of our tree surgeon.

JMNR work party – Saturday 18th February 2017

This month we will be checking and cleaning out the bird boxes on both the reserve and in the nearby wood and, subject to the weather conditions, having a bonfire.

Meet at the reserve on Saturday, 18th February at 9:30 am. We will finish around lunchtime. All members are welcome and no previous experience is necessary. Please wear appropriate work clothes, stout shoes, boots or wellies, and gardening gloves or equivalent. Most tools are available on-site but bring along anything you think might help; this month a short ladder, loppers, ‘Marigolds’, a small paint scrapper and a pen could prove useful.

Organised work parties take place at the Jim Mart reserve on the morning of the third Saturday in every month, except in December. For further information about the reserve visit the Jim Mart NR pages on the Ogston Bird Club website, or contact Peter Faulkner by email ([email protected]) or on 0784 214 8888 nearer the date.

JMNR – 21st January 2017 work party report

Three souls braved temperatures in the lower single figures; fortunately without wind or rain. Whilst two members finished off some hedge-laying left over from the 2015/2016 season, the other applied a lump-hammer and chisel, sledge-hammer, and pick-axe (more or less in that order, repeatedly) on some perennially annoying concrete blocks left over from the days of the Waterworks demolition period. In time all three were engaged on the latter task, prior to moving on to light duties pulling out dead Willowherb stalks with, hopefully, the attached roots.
Once again the clearing of ditches was put off, the west ditch being mostly occupied by a couple of substantial limbs discarded by one of the Horse Chestnuts.

December 2016 – Guided Walk Report

Paul Beard lead the way on the Brackenfield loop; anticlockwise for most of the participants this month. Windless conditions meant it was relatively pleasant for December. The sheer abundance of birdlife between the West Bank car park and the church was noteworthy, and the species total respectable at 50. Opinion varied on both the number of starters and number of finishers on the walk, 16 being the average.

Species: Blackbird, Black-headed Gull, Blue Tit, Bullfinch, Buzzard, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Coal Tit, Coot, Cormorant, Dunnock, Fieldfare, Gadwall, Goldfinch, Great Black-backed Gull, Great Crested Grebe, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Grey Wagtail, Greylag Goose, House Sparrow, Jackdaw, Jay, Kingfisher, Lapwing, Linnet, Little Grebe, Magpie, Mallard, Mistle Thrush, Moorhen, Nuthatch, Pied Wagtail, Pink-footed Goose, Redwing, Robin, Rook, Shoveller, Song Thrush, Starling, Stock Dove, Teal, Treecreeper, Wigeon, Willow Tit, Woodpigeon, Wren.

Report on trip to Blacktoft Sands 23/11/16

Eight members had a fabulous day at this RSPB reserve. The weather was dry much of the time although it was quite cold especially inside the hides. Some folks actually tried going outside in an effort to warm up in the weak autumn sunshine.

Forty nine species were clocked up, the highlights being excellent views of lots of Common Snipe which seem to be attracted in by the new developments.

In addition to this we were lucky enough to see a Jack Snipe from the Marshland Hide. By the time a camera was stuck onto the eyepiece of one of the scopes, it was taking a nap but if you check the photo carefully, you’ll be able to see the dark crown in an otherwise beautifully camouflaged bird. (Double click the photo to get a bigger image).

One of the target species for this trip was the Hen Harrier. Sadly we missed the one in the morning and none had appeared before we left at dusk. However, we did get to see a Kingfisher speeding past, a Great White Egret, great views of Bearded Tits with their colours enhanced by the setting sun, a female Merlin flashing her beautifully barred tail from her perch before flying off like a fighter plane to persecute a Buzzard and as darkness brought the day to an end, more than ten Marsh Harriers coming in to roost in the reed bed.

Just as were about to leave, a Barn Owl flew across the reeds – icing on the cake!
