JMNR – 20th August 2016 work party report

Despite dire weather warnings the work party proceeded as planned, with only one significant shower as we were about to leave the site. As a result all of the ‘hay’ meadow and the paths were successfully cleared of cuttings. Due to the previous day’s rain this proved to be quite heavy work and occupied the five attendees for most of the morning, with only a short period of time left for a brief search for wildlife (reported separately). The hoped for bonfire has been left for another occasion.

JMNR work party – Saturday 20th August 2016

A few days before this month’s work party the first of this year’s cuts of the little ‘hay meadow’ will be made. Therefore the main task will be raking up the cuttings, along with any on the paths, and barrowing them to the ‘trench’. Also, we need to have an unseasonal bonfire as quite a lot of woody material has accumulated in the fire-pit. It neither of these tasks appeal there is a hedge which needs trimming back from the path. As usual there should be time to study the wildlife, butterflies being particularly numerous at the current time.

To help at the work party, meet at the reserve on Saturday, 20th August at 9:30 am. We will finish around lunchtime. All members are welcome and no previous experience is necessary. Please wear appropriate work clothes, stout shoes, boots or wellies, and gardening gloves or equivalent. Most tools are available on-site but bring along anything you think might help such as a sturdy rake or a pair of loppers. At the time of notification insect repellent was not needed on site even though it was sunny and with little wind, but it might be worth bringing just in case.

Organised work parties take place at the Jim Mart reserve on the morning of the third Saturday in every month, except in December. For further information about the reserve visit the Jim Mart NR pages on the Ogston Bird Club website, or contact Peter Faulkner by email ([email protected]) or on 0784 214 8888 nearer the date.

13/7/16 – Trip report for Blacktoft Sands

The club had a fabulous trip to this wonderful reserve but sadly enjoyed by only 4 members.  The weather was good except for a couple of showers which at Blacktoft, with its 6 hides, didn’t ‘interrupt play’.

All in all, 56 species were identified of which the stars were numerous:
several Spotted Redshank and Black Tailed Godwits in breeding plumage, Bearded Tits, a Water Rail, a Peregrine carrying a large item of prey, a Hobby hawking for insects over the river, and a juvenile Barn Owl that we suspect had only just fledged.  We were also entertained by the antics of the juvenile Marsh Harriers along with a courting display and a food drop between two of the parents.
We also had the opportunity to do a bit of swotting up on the eclipse plumage of Mallards, Shovelers, Gadwall and Wigeon.

Some digiscoped snaps below give a flavour but for the rest, go to the Gallery.

Open Hide Day Sunday 17th July & Wednesday 10th August

We will be holding a couple of Open Hide Days in July and August to enable non-members a peak behind the scenes. This is an ideal opportunity to invite friends and family to see the exclusive views we enjoy from the OBC hides. Some members have offered their services to help out in the hides but additional help is always appreciated. Do come along. Hides are open to non-members 10.00 am to 4.00pm

7/7/16 – Second Nightjar Trip to Clumber Park

A second fully subscribed joint Ogston/DOS trip to Clumber Park this time had a delightfully warm, still evening.  Surprisingly, we were unable to fully capitalise upon this and  identified (saw/heard) only 35 different species.  However, early on we had excellent views of Linnets and were able to watch one or more families of Sedge Warbler hopping around on a large green mat of algae floating on the water surface at the base of the reeds looking for invertebrates. We also got good, close views of 4 female mandarins and a magnificent 3 foot long Pike which stationed itself under the bridge next to the ford near to Hardwick village. At about 21:15 we arrived at the clearing where we had seen Nightjars previously.  On this warm still evening we expected great things.   The resident Hobby did a couple of flies past and the Tawny Owls and Song Thrushes gave their usual background musical accompaniment.  Rather surprisingly Woodcock put in very few appearances although one of these was excellent with the bird wheeling above us uttering its distinctive squeak.  The warm evening however, did encourage the bats to come out and as the light faded they got progressively closer until they were wheeling around our heads.

As if operated by a time switch, the Nightjars again, began churring at 21:55 when 3 males started singing.  However, this time, sightings were limited and brief but on the positive side, we were were entertained to their full range of calls and song starting with the traditional rapid churring, a variety of yelps and squeaks and finally, a very slow churr sounding a bit like a motorbike slowing to tick over.  One lucky observer, did however, see three Nightjars in the air at once.

We will repeat these trips next year but may opt to schedule them for earlier in the year when the males might be more visible as they compete for mates and territory.

JMNR work party – Saturday 16th July 2016

This month’s work party is being co-ordinated by Paul Beard, who will be hoping for a turn-out to rival the attendance at his monthly bird walks. Many hands will make light work of the tasks, which will focus on keeping the paths clear and removing some of the Cleavers that are ‘decorating’ the young trees. A guided walk around the reserve is almost guaranteed to form a part of the morning’s attractions.

To help at the work party, meet at the reserve on Saturday, 16th July at 9:30 am. At this time of year insect repellent is recommended, particularly if it turns out to be a windless day.

29/6/16 – First Clumber Park Nightjar Trip Report

A fully subscribed joint Ogston/DOS trip to Clumber Park braved the dubious weather forecast and while the evening started off with the odd rain shower, the weather did turn fine later on when it really mattered.  All in all we identified (saw/heard) 37 different species.  Early on these included Linnet, Stock Dove and Reed Bunting which we saw around Hardwick Village.  At about 20:30, we set off for the clearing where we hoped to see the Nightjars.  In the cold still evening, listening to Tawny Owls and Song Thrushes made for a magical occasion.  The stars of the show though were undoubtedly the sighting a Hobby flying across, numerous good views of squeaking Woodcock and finally some impressive views of Nightjars in the gathering gloom.  The latter first made themselves known at 21:55 when 3 males started churring.  Not long after that we were lucky enough to get some quite close views of the birds flying.  All in all an enjoyable evening.

July 2016 Guided walk report

There was a good turn out of around 25 people for the July walk, led by Paul Beard. Following recent heavy rain, with more forecast for midday, there were no objectors to the choice of the ever popular Brackenfield loop. Although most participants made it as far as Miller’s Lane before the first showers came, only a handful continued on the planned route from there.

Forty-four species were noted down by the scribe: Blackbird, Blackcap, Blue Tit, Bullfinch, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Common Buzzard, Common Whitethroat, Coot, Cormorant, Dunnock, Garden Warbler, Goldfinch, Great Crested Grebe, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Grey Heron, Greylag Goose, Grey Wagtail, House Martin, House Sparrow, Jay, Kestrel, Little Egret, Magpie, Mallard, Nuthatch, Oystercatcher, Pheasant, Pied Wagtail, Reed Bunting, Robin, Rook, Sedge Warbler, Song Thrush, Swallow, Swift, Treecreeper, Tufted Duck, Woodpigeon, Wren, Yellowhammer.
Few butterflies were seen, and of just two species: Meadow Brown and Ringlet.

JMNR June 18th work party – cancelled

The work party due to be held at the Jim Mart reserve on Saturday 18th has been cancelled, in large part due to the coordinator having broken a toe.

June 2016 Guided walk report

The first half of this month’s ‘guided’ walk resembled a mystery tour. The stand-in guide had got it into his head to investigate some of the paths that he did not recall the walk taking in the last nine years. Initially, as we brushed through waist-high vegetation still damp with overnight dew, it seemed that few others had passed along those paths either.
In short, we headed westwards along the bridleway to meet the road to Ashover Hay, then south to cross Carr Brook and, continuing through and then behind Ogston Carr, eventually emerged at Nether Farm in Brackenfield. Here we were shown the location vacated by the just-removed well dressing, from whence we made our way to the Church and back along the West Bank. Eighteen participants enjoyed the leisurely pace, but perhaps not so much the wide variety and condition of some of the stiles.
It was fairly quiet in terms of bird-life although there were plenty of Yellowhammers still singing, albeit remaining largely invisible in the hedgerows.
Forty-two species of bird were recorded: Blackbird, Blackcap, Blue Tit, Canada Goose, Carrion Crow, Chaffinch, Chiffchaff, Common Buzzard, Common Whitethroat, Coot, Cormorant, Curlew (heard), Dunnock, Goldcrest, Goldfinch, Great Crested Grebe, Great Spotted Woodpecker, Great Tit, Greenfinch, Grey Heron, Greylag Goose, House Sparrow, Jay, Lapwing, Little Ringed Plover, Magpie, Mallard, Mute Swan, Nuthatch, Oystercatcher, Pheasant, Reed Bunting, Robin, Sedge Warbler, Song Thrush, Starling, Swallow, Tufted Duck, Willow Warbler, Woodpigeon, Wren, Yellowhammer.
Other wildlife noted included Large White, Small White, Orange Tip and Holly Blue butterflies; Nettle Tap, Diamondback and Common Roller moths; Red and Black Froghopper; Rabbit and Squirrel.
