Recorders report – October 2024

A total of 98 species were reported in October with the following notable sightings:

Arctic Tern (1 juvenile on 30th was one of latest county records on record), Blackcap (singles intermittently across the month), Black-necked Grebe (1 on 12th and 13th), Black Tern (1 on 2nd), Brambling (3 occasions at Highoredish), Caspian Gull (singles on 10 dates, 2 birds on 21st), Chiffchaff (on 10 dates), Common Scoter (2 on 1st), Fieldfare (108 at Highoredish on 26th), Golden Plover (1 on 16th), Goosander (on 12 dates, max of 14 on 30th), Goshawk (1 on 12th, 2 on 29th), Great Black-backed Gull (1 on 30th), Great White Egret (up to 2 birds on 4 dates), Grey Wagtail (up to 2 birds almost daily), Hawfinch (4 on 26th and 27th at Highoredish), House Martin (last seen on 12th), Kingfisher (up to 2 birds almost daily), Lesser Redpoll (on dates between the Res and Highoredish), Little Egret (singles on 4 dates), Little Owl (singles on 4 dates), Mandarin Duck (up to 30 on 21 days), Marsh Harrier (1 on 17th at Highoredish), Mediterranean Gull (1 on 1st), Merlin (1 on 11th), Osprey (1 on 2nd), Pink-footed Goose (max of 970 on 3 dates at both the Res and Highoredish), Pintail (2 on 14th), Pochard (max of 3 birds on 2 dates), Raven (max of 9 on 11 dates), Redwing (1st seen on 7th, then max of 1583 on 13 dates both at the Res and Highoredish), Ring Ouzel (1 at Highoredish on 26th), Rock Pipit (2 on 8th), Shelduck (1 on 28th), Shoveler (singles on 2 dates), Siskin (max of 52 on 7 dates at Highoredish), Snipe (max of 10 on 15 dates), Starling (1547 at Highoredish on 26th), Stonechat (1 at Highoredish on 26th), Swallow (last seen on 26th at Highoredish), Teal (seen daily, with a max of 54), Whooper Swan (5 on 11th), Wigeon (max of 23 on 11 dates), Willow Tit (singles on 6 dates), Woodpigeon (16160 and 14780 seen at Highoredish on 26th and 27th), Yellowhammer (on dates), Yellow-legged Gull (singles on 18 dates with 2 birds on 8th)
