Mild, sunny and calm weather. Alan Kydd was no doubt disappointed to find that, despite 40 minutes of observation, not a single butterfly could be detected on the week 11 transect walk.
There is often a reduction in butterflies on the wing in June, as the spring species come to the end of their flight periods and the summer species are about to start theirs. It appears that this year the weather pattern may have resulted in a gap between, rather than an overlap of, the seasonal flight periods.
Or are butterflies just superstitious about flying on the 13th?
