An interesting day with a female Marsh Harrier lifting up from behind the Carr Pond phragmites at 0810, presumably having roosted there overnight. Most (if not all) records here (26 up to the end of 2016) are of fly-through birds. Later in the day a White Stork drifted slowly north 1715-25, possibly Ogston’s first record. Waters are muddied by free-flying birds from collections and re-introduction schemes and we have had a known escapee here before but this bird was (apparently) unringed and at a classic time of year for the species so…In addition a Dunlin was present and a Whimbrel spent the best part of an hour on the west bank 1555-1650 before continuing on it’s way NNW.
